本研究考察了行的長度對于閱讀能力表現的影響。我們發現，行的長度為95cpl時閱讀速度最快。參與閱讀的人員報告說，他們或者喜歡，或者不喜歡比較長或比較短的行長。那些喜歡行長為35cpl的用戶說，較短的行長之所以能夠使閱讀變得輕易是因為它使得眼球的移動減少了。那些喜歡行長為95cpl的人則認為，他們喜歡在一行上顯示更多的內容。盡管有些參加研究的人員報告說他們感到閱讀30cpl行長的文章時要快一些，然而實際情況是他們此時的閱讀速度是最慢的。

從2004年9月到2005年3月，全美814家規模最大的報紙的發行量下降了1.9%。這個下降只是近20年來報紙發行量下降趨勢的一部分，而這部分歸因于人們對于互聯網以及其他形式媒體的使用的增加（有線電視、衛星電視等等）。隨著用戶繼續選擇將網絡作為其新聞來源，對于哪些因素能夠改進用戶在閱讀新聞時的體驗的理解就顯得非常重要了。當行的長度為95cpl 時，參與研究的人員能夠以相當快的速度閱讀新聞類文章，同時還能保持較高閱讀效率。盡管在不同行長的情況下，用戶在閱讀滿足度方面沒有什么差別，不過，那種能夠支持人們進行較快閱讀的行的長度將會對那些閱讀網絡新聞的用戶的整體體驗上產生影響。
